Georgia High School Sports: Football All-State Teams Announced, All-America Games Commence This Week

This is a blog post I did for SB Nation. One thing I did not mention in this piece is the Georgia Junior Bowl which will be played on Saturday. I'll have more on that within the next two days.

The football season has come to an end and that means some of the top players were honored, as the All-State teams were revealed. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Georgia Sports Writers Association came out with All-State teams for five classifications and if you have followed high school football in Georgia all year, there are no surprises. But the AJC wasn't done handing out rewards as they selected Chattahoochee QB Timmy Byerly as their overall player of the year. Bylery led the Cougars to their first state title in school history, passing for 2,664 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,509 yards and 21 touchdowns. He could play college football at Wake Forest, Air Force and Furman.

Also with the football season over, some of the state's top recruits will play in a couple of national high school all star games. Chip Towers of the AJC has been in Florida all week long to cover the Under Armour All-America game and some of the players that will take part in the game that are from Georgia are Valdosta tight end Jay Rome, Carver-Columbus QB Isaiah Crowell and Pope offensive lineman Thomas O'Riley. The other big all-star game is the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and some of the Georgia players that will play are Thomas County Central DE Ray Drew, Griffin safety Corey Moore and Grady wide receiver Damian Swann.
